The Phoenix Quarter

Landscaping

The greening of this site is considered of vital importance to the development of Phoenix Quarter. Small public gardens have been designed to match the character of the old Lewes town centre. Special emphasis will be placed on the choice of hard landscaping, lighting, street furniture and tree planting to achieve an environment of exceptional quality.

Angel Properties hope to work alongside local artists, craftsmen and designers to assist in the implementation of the landscape design.

THE RIVERBANK

At present very little is made of the River Ouse and it is our intention not only to protect the site with stronger flood defenses but to consider the river as an important amenity to the development of the project.

Pedestrian walkways will form a new access to the rivers edge and the rivers banks will be landscaped. We propose to work carefully with the Environment Agency to provide an exciting and a genuine new feel to this poorly used area.

Trees will be used to stabilise the existing banks and native plants capable of resisting tidal surge and flooding will used to colonise the muddy bank edges.

THE PHOENIX GATEWAY PARK

This point of entry to the site provides an excellent opportunity to create a small riverside park that can be enjoyed by Lewes residents and visitors. We consider this space to be of high value to the development and we propose to use art, purpose designed furniture and lighting to create a garden of special quality. The generous tree planting in this area will also enhance the appearance of the development. It is our intention to form the pedestrian link through this small park between the new Phoenix Quarter and the old town.

WATERSIDE SQUARE

This wonderful new public space is a great opportunity to have both cafes and small businesses enjoying a piazza type atmosphere. Plants in boxes to divide up the café spaces along with different paving materials, and unusual lighting will be employed to give a special character to this area.

An important piece of sculpture will be located as a central feature to this square and can be viewed on the axis of a number of different routes.

THE RIVERSIDE WALK

The Phoenix Quarter redevelopment proposes a continuous riverside walk connecting the Phoenix Causeway, the pedestrian bridge, the slipway and all points along the river edge.

A hardwood Boardwalk will create the interface with the river allowing closer access as it steps down to the river margin. Pockets of waterside planting will be created within the boardwalk and trees able to resist saline conditions planted above the mean high water level.

ARTS COURTYARD, NORTH SQUARE & FOUNTAIN PLACE

Arts Square, North Square and Fountain Place provide a linked pedestrian walkway and have a similar use of trees to provide a soft overhead canopy.

Sculpture and art is considered an essential part of the language of these Squares and local artists will be asked to be involved in the design of specially commissioned pieces including the water fountain.

The use of different paving materials in the hard landscaping creates a collage of muted colours that designate the function of different spaces.
