ANTHONY PAUL LANDSCAPE DESIGN
Anthony Paul Landscape Design has been commissioned to design the landscaping of the Phoenix Quarter. Within that design he will include all hard and soft landscaping, lighting, commissioning public art as well as water features.
Anthony has long and fruitful experience in all of these areas, not least in the wonderful gardens he has created with his wife The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Park in Ockley, Surrey over the last twenty years. He has recently completed the new courtyards for Brighton University, and has won awards for his work around the world. When not designing, he is in demand for his lectures and books on the art of landscaping.
In the Phoenix Quarter, Anthony will be taking themes from the surrounding environment, including the river, wetlands, parklands and important parts of the Lewes architectural background. His designs will include some very exciting water features, including an idea the use of the oldspring in Spring Gardens. Anthony will use mature native trees and grasses that fit with the flora of Lewes and the use of stone and hardwood in the hard landscaping that is sympathetic to the texture of the existing buildings in the town.
Lighting will play a vital role in his designs, working as effective street lighting, yet subtle in its effects and unobtrusive in its design. This lighting will also feature in the situation of the many pieces of sculpture and public art intended for the quarter, as well as the highlighting of the many of the buildings and large planters in the scheme.
It is the intention that the Phoenix Quarter’s landscape design will actually create an integrated environment that will be a ‘walk’ for the public to tour and enjoy. It is also hoped that it will provide the backdrop to an annual sculpture festival.
CZWG ARCHITECTS
Nicholas Campbell, Roger Zogolovitch, Rex Wilkinson and Piers Gough studied together at the Architectural Association School in the late ‘60s, setting up their fi rst offi ce while still at the School.
The partnership of CZWG was formalised in 1975, a period when society was reeling from the insensitivities of Modernism. Attempting to restore an architecture of sensitivity the firm developed a skill in the transformation of existing buildings both in terms of function and appearance. It is a particular skill which relies on knowing when the inherited form and structure of a building must be fought rather that subsumed. This ability to re-interpret and rejuvenate the past seeded CZWG’s major contribution to a new era of modern architecture.
The ability to make new architecture publicly appealing attracted the firm to the urban residential developer, and the practice quickly gained a reputation for attractive and innovative high density housing which also coincided with the regeneration of London’s Docklands in the 1980’s, enabling the practice to hone its urban design skills on larger tracks of redundant industrial land. A single stretch of the Thames, Limehouse Reach, now supports nearly a thousand homes by CZWG.
At the same time commissions in other realms of architecture exploited the practice’s wide-ranging skills and the fi rm now also has a significant track record in offices, education, transport, shopping leisure, art galleries, exhibitions, and masterplanning. It specialises in complex mixed-use schemes and has clients in both public and private sectors who have come to value its ability to gain challenging planning permissions in difficult circumstances.
The practice prides itself on its understanding of the Planning process, funding and practical, sustainable construction – a prerequisite for the prolific output of built work – with over sixty individual projects delivered.
But this pride in realism has not eclipsed the fi re of vision, creativity and innovation which launched the practice thirty years ago.
TIBBALDS PLANNING & URBAN DESIGN
Tibbalds Planning & Urban Design is an established multi-disciplinary team of architects, town planners, urban and landscape designers. We are committed to making complex urban environments work in a way that encapsulates excellence in design, form, function, movement and management for the benefi t of the people who use them.
Most of our work is at the heart of the urban regeneration process and focuses on the crossover between town planning and urban design, although we have experience across feasibility, planning and design, to implementation.
We provide creative and deliverable solutions for both private and public sector clients. Our projects encompass: feasibility studies, masterplans, development frameworks, regeneration strategies, design guidance, development planning, and urban design advice. We work throughout the UK at a variety of scales, from city-wide urban districts to historic market towns, waterfronts to small infill sites.
Tibbalds has a strong reputation for consistently delivering a high quality service, together with a clear philosophy: to make ‘people friendly’ places and to remember that our ultimate clients are the people who live, work and play in the places we create.
Masterplanning:
Successful masterplanning seamlessly brings together urban design and planning expertise. We co-ordinate and lead the design team in complex masterplanning projects and work with other professionals, including architects, to guide projects through the development process. We undertake masterplanning in relation to urban extensions, new settlements, city centre redevelopments, town centre renewal, district and quarter strategies and mixed-use redevelopment projects.
Urban Design - Promoting Design Quality:
Tibbalds has a long-standing reputation for providing specialist urban design expertise and advice. Our work includes research, policy formulation, best practice guidance, advice and negotiation, area/ site-specifi c guidance and training. We adopt a ‘tailor made’ approach, with methods that respond to the specifi c needs of each particular place and client team.
Regeneration - Revitalising our Towns and Cities:
The sense of place, the quality of built and natural environment, the vitality and accessibility of a particular place all contribute to creating a successful town or city that can compete effectively and attract residents, business and visitors. Sustainable regeneration is a complex process involving many disciplines and working effectively together towards a common goal. However, we believe that good ideas and great design are crucial to unlocking the full potential of an area and reversing the process of decline. Urban design has a key contribution to make to the regeneration process and to creating places that work better for all their users.
Town Planning - Delivering Excellence through Planning:
We believe urban design is at the heart of the development planning process. Achieving urban design quality requires specifi c skills and experience and increasingly we operate between the planner, developer and architect to provide a range of planning related services including preparing architectural and design briefs, site/ area specific planning policy guidance for local authority or developer, coordinating and submitting large scale complex planning applications and undertaking public consultation.
ANGEL PROPERTY
Angel Property was founded in 1993 on the belief that good design means good business. The company’s strength lies in its ability to successfully find areas in need of regeneration and unlock a potential that has not yet been recognised.
These schemes involve the combination of residential, mixed use and commercial projects to create new urban environments from previously underutilised sites. Initially created to convert a Bermondsey riverside warehouse into loft apartments, the company has now developed projects in several major cities and has emerged as a company at the forefront of urban regeneration.
Angel is proud to have received awards for its development work, most recently the 2004 Evening Standard London Lifestyle Award for the Jam Factory in Bermondsey SE1. Angel specialises in the restoration of listed buildings, as well as bringing ‘cutting-edge’ modern architecture to neglected buildings and sites.
On all its projects, Angel Property aims to achieve a high level of design excellence. This involves working with a portfolio of designers including both emerging new talent and more established fi rms. While Angel Property work closely with these practices to ensure that the buildings are visually exciting, they also ensure they are financially viable. Angel Property believes that good design and attention to detail are paramount in creating architecture that stands the test of time.
